In 1902 the Alma Doepel was built and launched from the wharf,
the remains of which can still be seen by the river's edge next to the Old Butter Factory.
In 1906 the site became home to the Upper Bellingen Dairy Co-operative, and in 1919 the factory diversified by adding a
bacon factory to the southern end of the complex.
With the boom in the local dairy industry during the 20's, the Butter Factory became an even stronger focal point for the
region, with the addition of its revolutionary internal concrete girder construction, which was years ahead of its time.
The churns fell silent many years ago, but now new life has been brought to the complex.
The Butter Factory is now home to one of the finest arrays of arts, crafts and lifestyle gift ware to be found anywhere,
with much of the work produced on site.
The Old Butter Factory has one again become a focal point for the region, and is one of the most unique attractions on
the north coast.
Come and meet the people who have created this wonderful labyrinth of arts and crafts, imported antiques, fashion accessories,
high quality lifestyle gift ware, fine food and beverages.
Set amidst a peaceful garden atmosphere, you are sure to be impressed by the range, quality and talents on display.
