August Newsletter

Welcome to Bellingen's July 2001 Community Markets newsletter.

Every month you see the same markets staff diligently at work running the Markets but you may not realise that there is a greater force at work than the humble heart that beats behind the orange jacket. It is the Bellingen Community Markets Association (BCMA) Management Committee that is the real mover and shaker behind the Markets.

The committee employs a manager (hey, that's me) and I and the staff to do the leg work. But it is the committee that sets the direction we go in. They do this by having a united vision of what they want the Markets to be, now and in the future and from this position setting goals for the Markets and the manager to achieve. They navigate, we drive.

In a couple of months the BCMA is going to have an Annual General Meeting and will be looking for new members for the management committee. The committee is about to take a new direction with some key members leaving and it promises to be an exciting and constructive time ahead. The committee will need two or three new members to join a group of experienced people who are keen to set a steady and consistent course for the Markets to follow.

Do you have constructive ideas about the markets and can you imagine what it could be like now and in the future? Do you live in the Bellingen Shire and want to do some unpaid work for this very worthwhile community organisation? If you do then please write to PO Box 103 Bellingen, NSW 2454, or e-mail your response to markets@bellingen.com.

Jazz

We have been very fortunate this year with the Jazz Festival. In past years we have had some quite tired blues bands so this time we asked the organisers to make us more part of the whole thing. We have the Milan Jazz Gang, the import band from Italy and (at the time of writing I am farily confident) we have the twenty seven piece Air Force Band with twenty people doing the Jitterbug on the oval. This will be one of the highlights of the Jazz Festival but there is plenty more music and fun times to be had in Bellingen after the Markets. I hope you are able to join in the fun.

Casuarina Market Day

Casuarina Steiner School, situated in Coffs Harbour, will hold a monthly produce and craft market on the first Saturday of every month, commencing October 6th, 2001.

In keeping with the traditional format of Bellingen and other alternate markets, the asthetic appeal of the stone and timber buildings and extensive grounds lends itself to an alternate market space incorporating local organic produce, inspirational craft and locally manufactured goods, cultural entertainment and great food.

By creating this extra market event on the Mid North Coast, we are providing opportunities for stall holders to earn extra income plus add value to this region's market community. We are now taking bookings for our first market day. Packages are available for 3,6 and 12 month blocks. Site numbers are limited and preference will be given to locally grown and produced goods and services.

For booking information and general enquiries please call Rowena Bianchino: 66 538 713, or Melissa Saunders: 66 538154.
